    Antarctic Ice Marathon

    Antarctica

Hi my name is Alan and I am flying in a Ilyushin military jet to Antarctica to run in the Antarctic Ice Marathon on Thursday 19 November

Why? Because I'm odd and I am rubbish at running but love it. So I like going to interesting places and running in marathons. Its a big challenge for me to not come last.

How? The average temperature will be -20 C to -40 C, poor choice of clothing invites frostbite or overheating and hypothermia. Its as dry as the Sahara so dehydration will be a problem. The running surface is a kilometre thick glacier, ice and snow, a hard, 26 mile slog basically. And maybe you can help build a new orphanage for the children of Darjeeling by sponsoring my marathon.

My flights, marathon and Antarctica have all been paid for by myself. So anything you donate will go directly and only to the Darjeeling Children's Trust, a UK based charity. Run completely by volunteers, with no offices and no overheads, a true charity I have visited the girls orphanage in Darjeeling India when I was running there. Its the size of an English 3 bedroom house and its home to 40 girls aged 5-17, unheated and freezing in winter, with some sleeping on floors and only 2 bathrooms.
